Uttranchal Mahotsav in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

People of Uttranchal living in Gujarat are celebrating the formation of new separate Hill State for Uttranchal. Around one thousand uttaranchali along with local people have participated in this event with the debate and lively discussion on the future development scenario of this newly carved state from Uttar Pradesh. Shri K. K. Sastri and Shri C. L. Sastri noted scholar and educationists were the dignitaries of the function. Anticipating the fact that thew Uttranchal is soon to become a reality a two days seminar on "Development of Uttarakhand" was organized at Ahmedabad
by Uttranchal Sea Samiti with the sole objectives to evolve a strategy for contributions towards new Uttranchal State. More than 200 experts belonging to government, semi-government, public sector and non-government organization had attended and exchange their experiences, expertise and views said Dr. M. M. Kimothi who was the Convenor of that seminar. The final proceeding of this seminar was released on this occasion by shri K. K. Sastri, a noted scholar and educationists.

The Uttranchal Sewa Samiti Felicitated the Dr. M. M. Kimothi, Shri Devi Duth Sharma, Shri Prakash Joshi, Shri K. S. Aswal and others who did outstanding work for the cause of Uttranchal.

Since independence the struggle for separate Hill State was on, however, the beginning of 1990 witnessed unprecedented local support for the creation of this state. In the process many people sacrificed their lives. Today's celebration begins with emotional tribute to these martyrs because of their long cherished aspiration of Uttranchal, which has become a reality today. Though the celebration had tremendous enthusiasm. However, participant also voiced their concern about the kind of development planning this new state should adopt. Genesis of this concern appear to be realities in the same that during the last 50 years no major infrastructure and industrial development were made in this region. On the contrary the exploited policies deprived the terrain from its rich bio-diversity which has resulted into tremendous hardship in the every day life. Today the per capita income and per family land holding in the region is abysmal.

Participant also advocated that in order to have a self sustains economic base it is essential that the new state should emphasized upon pollution free industries in the region such as electronics, information technology, Pharmaceutical, Horticulture, environmental friendly tourism and harnessing of hydropower using mini runn-off the river scheme. It was also felt during the discussion that till date no comprehensive document on the generation of revenue exists. This is extremely important to create a new state Uttranchal with the aspiration of those who laid down their life with the dream that it will be a model state in the country.

The members requested the rich entrepreneur of Gujarat to assist the infrastructure and industrial development in the state, which was well received by the local people. Members also thank the people of Gujarat for their support during the course of the agitation for separate Hill State. Finally the programme was concluded with folk dances of Garhwal and Kumaun by the troops of the local artists.
